Observation Narrative
Plot located on crest of Doefoot Mountain, ca. 100 m east of road near larger "flagged" Pinus strobus; follow small hunter's trail for access. Virtually no herbaceous plants exist in the dense evergreen forest at this extremely oligotrophic site (just 10 vascular plant species occur in the plot). Organic layer is very thick and poorly decomposed. Within the plot and elsewhere, it was difficult to see the tree crowns when looking through the incredibly dense Rhododendron catawbiense. Much Leucobryum and Dicraneum in plot.
Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Pinus strobus (61.2), Quercus montana (24.3).
